FAQ

Questions, answered

What is Portabase?

Portabase is a free Windows app that turns any tablet or phone into a wireless touchpad, keyboard, stream deck and Xbox-style gamepad for your PC, plus a media remote with synced lyrics, a karaoke machine, a desk clock, a webcam and microphone, a second screen you can touch, file transfer both ways and a shared clipboard. The PC runs Portabase; the tablet just opens a web page, so there is nothing to install on the tablet.

Is Portabase really free?

Yes. Every feature is free and there is no premium tier or license key. Portabase is funded by a few sponsor ad slots and by optional tips.

Which devices work?

The PC needs Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit). Any Android tablet, iPad or phone with a modern browser works as the controller, on the same Wi-Fi as the PC.

Windows says “Windows protected your PC”. Is it safe?

That warning appears for apps that aren't code-signed yet. Click “More info”, then “Run anyway”. You can check the download's SHA-256 checksum on this page against the file you downloaded.

Does the gamepad need a driver?

Yes — games see Portabase as an Xbox 360 controller through the free ViGEmBus driver. The Portabase dashboard tells you if it's missing and links to it.

Can the tablet be a second monitor?

Yes, in two ways. Out of the box the Screen tab mirrors your PC's display on the tablet and lets you touch it — tap to click, hold for a right click, two fingers to scroll. For a real extra monitor you can drag windows onto, Windows needs a virtual display driver. Portabase fetches the free, signed open-source one for you, then opens that driver's own installer so you can finish the job — two steps, because that is how the driver ships — each behind the usual Windows administrator prompt. Portabase never installs it silently, and it tells you which step you are on. Once the driver is in, Portabase sizes that display to match your tablet.

Can I send files between the tablet and the PC?

Yes. The Transfer tab sends files from the tablet to your PC, where they land in a folder you choose (Downloads\Portabase Files by default), and files you offer from the PC appear on the tablet to download. Clipboard sync is separate and automatic: copy text or an image on the PC and it appears on the tablet, and the other way round. Files you copy in Explorer show up on the tablet as downloads. On iPhone and iPad, sending the tablet's clipboard takes one tap, because Apple's browser never hands a web page the clipboard on its own.

Can I use my tablet as a webcam and microphone?

Yes. The Cam & Mic tab sends the tablet's camera and microphone to your PC, where apps like Zoom, Teams, Meet and Discord can pick them. Windows needs two free helpers for that: OBS Studio, which adds the “OBS Virtual Camera”, and VB-CABLE, which adds a microphone called “CABLE Output”. Portabase tells you if either is missing.

Does the media remote work with Spotify and YouTube Music?

Yes. It controls whatever Windows sees as playing, including Spotify, YouTube Music and YouTube in Chrome or Edge, Media Player and VLC, with album art and lyrics from the free LRCLIB database. You can turn lyrics off.

Is my tablet's input sent over the internet?

No. The tablet talks directly to your PC over your local Wi-Fi, including camera and microphone streams, and pairing uses a PIN or QR code shown only on the PC. Portabase only goes online to fetch sponsor ads and, when lyrics are on, to look up the song's title and artist on LRCLIB.

Ready to put your tablet to work?
